North Carolina primary 2024: What to know as Democrats, Republicans and Libertarians cast ballots on Super Tuesday

From the presidential primaries to statewide races, people in the Tar Heel state will pick the candidates they want to face off across several races in November.

NORTH CAROLINA, USA — North Carolina's 2024 elections are Tuesday, when people in the Tar Heel state pick the candidates they want to face off across several races in the November general election, including presidential primaries across three parties.

The presidential race is shaping up to be a rematch between Democratic President Joe Biden and former Republican President Donald Trump. But the frontrunners are facing challengers that could reveal their weaknesses going into the November election.

Additionally, North Carolina is having primaries for several statewide and congressional races.

Here are five things to know about the 2024 primaries in North Carolina.

North Carolina is a Super Tuesday state for the presidential primaries

North Carolina is one of 15 states, along with American Samoa, participating in Super Tuesday, when the highest number of states hold presidential primary elections all on the same day.

The outcome will likely indicate the frontrunner for the Democratic and Republican presidential nominations since hundreds of delegates will be up for grabs.

The Libertarian Party is also hosting a presidential primary, but unlike the Democratic and Republican primaries, the results aren't binding.

How many delegates does North Carolina have?

On the Republican side, 854 of 2,429 will be at stake on Super Tuesday, while Democrats will award 1,420 delegates, according to the Associated Press (AP). Nobody will lock up the nomination on Super Tuesday, but each party’s frontrunner can get pretty close.

Of North Carolina's Super Tuesday delegates, Republicans have 74, while Democrats have 116, according to Politico. For Republicans, whichever candidate gets 1,215 delegates or more nationally will become the presumptive presidential nominee, while the Democratic threshold is 1,969.

Several statewide primary elections on the ballot: Governor, attorney general, US House and more

North Carolina has a ton of offices on the ballot, including the statewide races for governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, and attorney general, as well as all 14 U.S. House of Representatives seats.

Additionally, many counties have elections for boards of commissioners and boards of education, and some municipalities have elections for mayor and seats on their governing board.

A full list of primary candidates for all of North Carolina's 2024 races is available on the State Board of Elections website. You can also use the board's voter search tool which includes voting jurisdictions, polling places, sample ballots when available, absentee ballot information, and voter history.

Yes, voters affiliated with any political party will be able to vote on the ballot of candidates for their party only, according to the North Carolina State Board of Elections. However, unaffiliated voters vote on any one political party’s ballot. People can't vote in more than one party’s primary.
