MANTEO, N.C. — North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island's Sea Turtle Assistance and Rehabilitation (STAR) Center released six rehabilitated sea turtles on Saturday.

Two green sea turtles and four loggerheads made their way back home after they were released at the Frisco Bathhouse beach access, which is part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

Aquarium staff worked alongside volunteers from the Network for Endangered Sea Turtles (NEST) and the National Park Service (NPS) to ensure a successful release.

Five of the turtles were brought to the STAR Center during the winter due to cold-stunning, a hypothermia-like condition that occurs when water temperatures drop rapidly. The sixth turtle, a loggerhead, sustained injuries from an entanglement.

The turtles have recovered and were cleared to be released by the NC Aquariums veterinary staff.
