BERTIE COUNTY, N.C. — An inmate at the Bertie Correctional Institution died after being assaulted by another inmate Friday, officials with the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction said.

Rasheen Younger, a 44-year-old man, died Sunday morning at an outside medical facility with family beside him.

According to the department, correctional officers found Younger unconscious around 4:45 p.m. Friday. Investigators believe another offender struck Younger, causing him to fall backward and hit his head.

The department said the prison's medical team performed advanced lifesaving measures, which EMS personnel continued as Younger was transported to a hospital.

Younger was serving a 76-year sentence for a 1997 first-degree rape conviction in Pitt County, according to the department. He was housed in medium custody at the prison and was projected to be released on May 2, 2065.

The Windsor Police Department in North Carolina is investigating the deadly assault and the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction has started an internal investigation.
