Elizabeth City hosts town hall on insurance fraud

About a dozen people attended a town hall in Elizabeth City on Thursday to try and learn how to spot a scam.

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — The North Carolina Department of Insurance says fraud is a growing problem in the Tar Heel State. That's why the insurance commissioner is stepping in to help make sure people don't fall victim.

About a dozen people attended a town hall in Elizabeth City on Thursday to try and learn how to spot a scam. It's the fourth in a series of town halls that are being hosted across the state.

Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey said this isn't just a North Carolina problem.

"Fraud is costing Americans over $308 billion a year. Here in North Carolina, that's almost $300 a month per person," he said.

The North Carolina Department of Insurance plans to hold even more town halls across the state in the coming months. They are free and anyone can attend.
