North Carolina to roll out new driver's licenses with increased security

New North Carolina driver's licenses will be made of a stronger material and come equipped with over 50 security features to prevent and detect fraud, NCDMV says.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — North Carolinians will soon have a new look, feel and sound for their driver's licenses and the state says these new ID cards will be more secure than ever.

The new North Carolina driver's licenses will be made of a completely new material. It's much harder than the current one and will sound more like metal than plastic if you drop it.

It looks a lot different, too, featuring the dogwood, the state border outline and the state salamander. Yes, you read that right, there is a state salamander in North Carolina.

These changes come as the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV) looks to make licenses more secure and harder to replace. They'll be laser engraved and come equipped with more than 50 security features to help prevent you from becoming a victim of fraud.

The NCDMV expects to have the new cards rolled out sometime within the next month. The good news for folks not looking to change their ID anytime soon is you won't have to get the new one until your current license expires.
