On April 18, 2015, two unrelated incidents were reported to the Norfolk State University Police Department involving campus safety. Both incidents are being investigated.

The first incident involved a report of gunshots fired in Lot 35 at 12:45 a.m. Police immediately responded to the scene and did not find any persons injured or damage to property.

The second incident occurred around 3 p.m. and involved a report of sexual misconduct in the form of an unwelcome sexual advance or touching by an unknown male against a female student inside the Lyman Beecher Brooks Library. The victim reported the offensive contact to the University Police and has been provided with assistance from University staff.

The NSU Police Department has increased security and regular patrols in the library and other locations on campus. Notification of both incidents were immediately issued to students, faculty and staff to inform the University community via our campus emergency alert system, mobile safety application and through email. Such actions comply with requirements under the Board of Visitors' policy on Sexual Misconduct and the protocol for reporting criminal activity and other emergencies on campus.

In addition, campus-wide training about sexual misconduct, safety tips and other public safety-related information is offered to students, faculty and staff on a regular basis.
