New signs in James City County discourage panhandling

The new signs discourage drivers from giving money to people on the side of the road.

JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WVEC) -- New signs were posted in James City County recently asking drivers to not give money to people on the side of the road.

The signs read, "Do not encourage panhandling by giving money from vehicle."

It also has a telephone number for those panhandling to call if they need housing assistance.

It is not illegal to ask for money in designated VDOT right-of-ways, but the signs were posted in an effort to encourage the homeless to seek safer assistance, according to county officials.
