VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Karen Ellis of Virginia Beach said she was happy to travel back to her hometown of Kansas City with her 18-year-old son to celebrate the Chiefs' Super Bowl win.
"Kansas City is a sports town. People stand behind their teams here. When you leave Kansas City, you leave... but it's always your hometown," she explained
Ellis said her son attended the celebration parade and as they were about to walk to the rally, her son changed his mind.
"My son, he just said, 'I really don't feel like it,'" said Ellis.
Later, Ellis learned that event had turned violent. According to the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department, one person was killed, and 22 others were shot.
Detectives believe the shootings happened after a dispute between several people. Two teenagers were detained, and investigators recovered several guns.
"I feel like it tainted a very good thing. I don't think we'll go to Union Station and not feel the same about it," she said.
Ellis traveled back to Virginia on Thursday. She said she believes Kansas City is recovering after this mass shooting event.
"The City is going to have to heal from this," Ellis declared.
The Kansas City Police Department said this incident is still under investigation, and local law enforcement working with the FBI.
