Virginia Beach surf art expo showcases artists' love for the water

Dozens of artists packed the Oceanfront boardwalk during Memorial Day Weekend as part of the 2018 Steel Pier Classic and surf Art Expo.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., (WVEC) -- Ed Obermeyer spent 34 years traveling around the world — surfing, teaching and creating art.

“It communicates the essence of your soul,” said Obermeyer. “It communicates the personal strong feelings about your life experiences.”

At almost 70 years old, Obermeyer said he’s been retired for six years but continues to paint and create art.

“It’s about sharing that passion for life and the things I find wonderful,” said Obermeyer.

Dozens of artists packed the Oceanfront boardwalk during Memorial Day Weekend as part of the 2018 Steel Pier Classic and surf Art Expo.

Organizer Jodie Woodward started the art show back in 2008.

“I wanted to create a platform for artists to be able to express themselves and celebrate surfing in Virginia Beach,” said Woodward.

The event also included a surfing competition.

On Memorial Day, there will be a Hawaiian-style Paddle-Out to honor fallen U.S. military members.

Obermeyer said he’s glad to share his passion for art and the water with visitors who stop by his tent on the boardwalk.

“The water is my soul and it’s my health,” said Obermeyer.

“It keeps me healthy and happy and that’s a good thing, being healthy and happy, I think.”
