City of Virginia Beach sues insulin makers over pricing

The costs of providing diabetes medications to Virginia Beach's 5,900 health plan subscribers and their dependents between 2018 and 2022 totaled $9 million.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The City of Virginia Beach says it is suing insulin makers for insulin pricing.

In a statement to 13News Now, a city spokesperson said it provides "critical" health services for over 450,000 residents and maintains a self-insured health plan. The spokesperson said it cost the City over $9 million to provide diabetes medications to its more than 5,900 health plan subscribers and their dependents between 2018 and 2022.

The Virginia Beach School Board provides health insurance benefits to teachers, support staff, and retirees which cost over $11.4 million during the same period.

“Through this litigation, we are seeking reforms to stop predatory pricing and to hold these companies accountable for unjustly and unlawfully profiting at the expense of self-funded payers such as the City of Virginia Beach and its School Board," said Chris Boynton, Deputy City Attorney.
