VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A student from Old Donation School in Virginia Beach will have her work of art on display for all to see at the upcoming Holiday Lights at the Beach.
Kylie Zhu was crowned the winner of the Holiday Lights at the Beach competition during a school assembly Thursday. Her piece was judged against more than fifty other drawings.
Kylie's family joined her during the announcement, congratulating her on the achievement.
"I'm so proud of Kylie," exclaimed Kylie's mother. "She's always been so sweet and can draw, of course. But today, this award, I feel so proud of her, so happy."
Both Kylie's mother and father boasted about her talent and her love for drawing.
"I feel so proud for what she did, all the time. We have so many art at home of hers I'll always just show it to everybody I know," Kylie's father told 13News Now.
Kylie shared that the warm, sunny weather in Virginia Beach inspired her take on a holiday drawing.
"Even if you don't think it's going to happen, it might so keep dreaming," said Kylie. "Do what you want. You don't have to set yourself to some standard."
Andy Vakos, a local artist, will be bringing Kylie's drawing to life. The drawing will be built into a large light display that will be one of more than 25 large pieces lighting up the Oceanfront this year.
The final creation is expected to be finished before Thursday, November 16 when it will be unveiled during a special ceremony.
Following the unveiling, Holiday Bike Night will commence where cyclists will have a chance to get a first look at the light show. Bike Night runs from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, November 16 beginning at 9th Street.
