VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — CORRECTION: This story has been updated to remove phrasing that indicated Virginia Beach School Board voted to start the city's school year earlier in 2024-25. The first day of class will be essentially the same as this school year.
The school calendar is essentially staying the same for Virginia Beach City Public Schools.
On Tuesday night, the Virginia Beach School Board voted 5-4 to set the start of the upcoming school year the week before Labor Day.
In 2023, school started on August 28. For the 2024-25 school year, the first day of class will be August 26, 2024, and the last day will be June 13, 2025.
After the vote, the Virginia Beach Education Association described the change as "not the perfect calendar but... one that promotes better working conditions and learning conditions."
Virginia Beach isn't the only school division to either begin the school year before Labor Day or consider doing so.
Norfolk Public Schools will start its 2024-2025 school year on August 19 with the last day of classes set for May 30. Suffolk is also considering beginning its school year in August. Chesapeake is considering two different scheduling school calendar plans, but both would start the school year after Labor Day.
