VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The Virginia Beach Police Department said one of its officers is facing a domestic assault charge.
Officers arrested Master Police Officer Albert Joseph DeAngelis II, 48, on Wednesday.
The alleged incident took place on Tuesday.
DeAngelis has been with the police department for 17 years and is assigned to the Operations Division, Uniform Patrol. He worked as a school resource officer at Lynnhaven Middle School.
In 2006, police arrested DeAngelis' wife, Michelle, and his brother-in-law, Hanns Herzog, and mother-in-law. The three faced charges related to a plan to murder DeAngelis. Each served time because of it.
At the time Herzog pleaded guilty to Attempted Murder, he told the court he was protecting his pregnant sister and her children from an abusive situation.
There wasn't an indication if that case or the people involved had a connection to the charge against DeAngelis.
In 2012, the department recognized DeAngelis with a Life Saving Medal because of his work to rescue five people from a retention pond in front Landstown High School where he worked as the school resource officer. A school security officer helped DeAngelis in the rescue.
Police said DeAngelis will be on administrative assignment pending the outcome of the criminal and administrative investigations.
