VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A man was arrested Wednesday for stealing a Virginia Beach Police Department Marine Patrol Boat.

Police say that around 9 a.m., officers were made aware of a man, later identified as 29-year-old Michael Mastrianni, who was in a VBPD boat in Long Creek near Great Neck Road West.

Police units responded to the area and saw from land that Mastrianni was in the boat under anchor, according to a VBPD statement. Police then used another police boat to approach the stolen boat and took Mastrianni into custody without incident.

The stolen boat is currently docked at the City Marina for investigation of damages and forensic processing. Police say an initial investigation indicates the boat didn't have power when Mastiranni is accused of stealing it. Investigators believe he untied the boat and drifted in the channel before being taken into custody.

Mastiranni has been charged with grand larceny and destruction of property.
