VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Virginia Beach police are searching for a shooting suspect they said injured a man at one of the city's 7-Eleven convenience store locations.
The crime happened near the heart of Virginia Beach Town Center on Dec. 30.
On Jan. 2, police released surveillance images of the alleged gunman and his car. In the photos, a man with facial hair is seen holding up a gun. He was wearing a hoodie, ballcap, long pants and sneakers.
A post from Virginia Beach Crime Solvers said the unknown man waited for the victim to come out of the 7-Eleven on Aragona Boulevard near the intersection with Cleveland Street. Crime Solvers said the man approached the victim, pulled out a gun and started shooting.
A police spokeswoman told 13News Now the victim is a man and should survive.
"We heard the gunshots, came to the window. Everybody came outside," a neighbor who lives across the street said.
The neighbor, who did not want to be identified, said the shooting didn't surprise him.
"If we need something for our children or something like that, the adults will go. We can't send our kids over there," the neighbor said.
Several other neighbors and customers 13News Now spoke with didn't want to be interviewed because of safety concerns, as the suspect behind the shooting is still out there.
"We just stick together as a community. We watch each other's backs," the anonymous neighbor added.
The alleged gunman drove away in a silver third-generation Toyota Avalon; the model could be between 2004-2012. There's a sticker on the bottom right back window.
Company executives are also responding to the incident, calling it "tragic." In a statement from 7-Eleven, they said they're working with local law enforcement on the investigation.
"We are aware of the tragic incident that took place in Virginia Beach on Saturday. 7-Eleven is cooperating with local law enforcement's investigation," according to a release from 7-Eleven.
