VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer, and that brings lifeguards back out to the Virginia Beach Oceanfront.
The Virginia Beach Lifesaving Service is staffing up and preparing for the big summer crowds. They began manning lifeguard stands this past weekend. There are 12 manned stands on the resort beach (1st Street to 42nd Street), with supervisors patrolling the beach as well.
Chief of the Virginia Beach Lifesaving Service Tom Gill said that when Memorial Day weekend hits, they will have "upwards of 60 to 75 people working a day."
Gill said they are still in need of more lifeguards.
"We are still hiring," he said. "Feel good about applications and testing to date, but there is room for more."
