VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — City leaders are moving forward with their plans to reconfigure Atlantic Avenue near the Cavalier Hotel.
The plan is to put a cul-de-sac where Atlantic Avenue meets Pacific Avenue.
Virginia Beach Public Works members met with residents who live in Oceanfront to tell them plans to reconfigure Atlantic Avenue is a "go."
Developer Bruce Thompson agreed to fund the majority of the project after attempts to receive state funding failed.
The goal is to add a pedestrian ramp, sidewalks and a new traffic signal at 40th Street.
People in the area worry about large trucks using the cul-de-sac all day to drop off items to the hotel, but others are only seeing the positives of the cul-de-sac and extra green space.
"It's going to be wonderful. It's going to be a park. It will be attractive. Right now it's difficult to cross. You can't see cars coming around the bend and there are a lot of people that walk across there," said Patty Cox.
The city said 40th Street will be closed to traffic in the beginning of July, and the project should take about a year.
