NORFOLK, Va. — The Virginia Beach Fire Department (VBFD) responded to a fire in the 500 block of Kirkwood Lane just after 7 p.m. Thursday night.
Crews arrived to find the single story home and garage "fully engulfed" in flames, VBFD said.
The fire was marked under control at 7:52 p.m., and was marked completely out at 9:57 p.m.
One adult has been displaced from the home, but VBFD said they were uninjured. There were no other reported injuries, and no firefighters were injured either. However, one cat unfortunately did not survive. The American Red Cross has been contacted to provide housing assistance, VBFD said.
VBFD classified this as an accidental fire. They said it was caused by a space heater in the garage igniting combustibles nearby.
This is the second major house fire in Virginia Beach in the span of 24 hours. Just before midnight on Wednesday night, a house on Seafarer Cove caught fire and displaced a family of four. VBFD deemed that house "a complete loss."
