VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The Special Olympics of Virginia made its way to Virginia Beach Public Middle Schools on Monday for the city's first-ever Big Feet Meet.
The athletic event invited students with intellectual disabilities to participate. A similar event happens in the spring for younger students, the Little Feet Meet, but for middle-schoolers, this was a first.
More than 100 Virginia Beach middle schoolers were invited to the event at Corporate Landing Middle School. From 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., they were supported by their general education peers as they completed the activities.
The day began with an opening ceremony, and featured various athletic events. It wrapped up with an awards ceremony.
The Special Olympics of Virginia will be back in Virginia Beach this weekend with the Special Olympics Virginia Fall Championship. More than 1,200 athletes from across Virginia will compete in sports like soccer, golf and bocce.
