Virginia Beach, developer reach agreement on former Dome site

Singer and Beach native Pharrell Williams, partnering with a real estate developer, hopes to revitalize the site into a multi-use entertainment complex, including a surf park.

The City of Virginia Beach has reportedly reached an agreement with a developer to revitalize the former Dome site, with the goal of turning it into an entertainment complex and surf park.

Such a transformation has been the brainchild of singer and Virginia Beach native Pharrell Williams, who partnered with Venture Realty Group to help make this Oceanfront revitalization into a reality.

In an email exchange obtained by 13News Now, City Manager Dave Hansen said Venture Waves LLC had accepted the terms the City had laid out to them.

"Though we have much to accomplish before a groundbreaking takes place, this is that critical step to rounding the bases," Hansen said in one email.

In a separate email to Hansen, Michael Culpepper of Venture Realty Group wrote, "We remain as optimistic in the project today as our first meeting. We have a great responsibility and privilege to work together to create a catalyst for a positive transformation of the Oceanfront and the City. We are ready to move forward."

The real estate developer hopes to turn the Dome site, which is currently a parking lot between 18th and 20th Streets off of Pacific Avenue, into a multi-use entertainment epicenter. Portions of the property will become an indoor and outdoor event center, as well as a surf park.

While Hansen said this agreement is a big step forward in the process, any such deal would still need approval from City Council.
