Virginia Beach city council looking for applicants to fill Nygaard's vacant seat

The person City Council appoints will serve in the vacant seat until an official candidate is selected during a special election in November.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Virginia Beach city council is looking for applicants to fill David Nygaard's vacant seat.

A three-judge panel ruled against former Councilman David Nygaard on March 8 voiding his election because there was credible evidence he did not live in the district he was running for.

Now, the Virginia Beach City Council is encouraging registered voters who live in the Beach District to apply for consideration.

To apply candidates must provide a letter of interest, a resume, a statement of economic impact, and a completed questionnaire. Applications should be submitted to the council by April 8 at 5 p.m.

The person City Council appoints will serve in the vacant seat until a candidate is selected during a special election in November.

The City Council will review applications in a closed session to narrow down the applicants to a short list of candidates. The list will be made public on April 9. 

Application materials for the shortlist will be made available to the public. The community will be given an opportunity to provide feedback on the candidates during the April 16 City Council meeting. 

The City Council will interview selected candidates during a public special session on April 23. Immediately following the interviews, the City Council will deliberate and may make a decision.
