VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — It’s a back-to-school opportunity for students across Hampton Roads: an open call for Virginia Beach’s next big mural design. One lucky student will get much more than just their art on a building.
Murals are a big part of what makes creative districts in Hampton Roads pop. Local artists have used buildings to pour color into these areas for years.
The ViBe Creative District in Virginia Beach is one of the most well-known, and a new partnership between ViBe and Bryant & Stratton College is allowing local students to design their own painted legacy.
They’re calling on artists 16 and older, mainly high school juniors and seniors, to submit a mural concept.
The winning 8 x 28-foot design will then be painted on-site at the Bryant & Stratton campus near Mount Trashmore in Virginia Beach. The theme of the design celebrates the 170th anniversary of the college and its mission.
But having your mural design painted at the school isn’t the only thing that student walks away with.
They’ll also get a $20,000 scholarship to Bryant & Stratton College for themselves or for another student of their choice.
Winners will be notified by Monday, September 9, and the painting will start soon after.
Artists have until Friday, September 6 to apply.
