VDOT: Set up for new traffic pattern shift, on I-264 east near TopGolf facility

VDOT says this new traffic pattern will be in place for several months as crews continue construction related to the Greenwich Road flyover.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — VDOT says motorists traveling on Interstate 264 on will notice a new traffic pattern on the eastbound lanes near the TopGolf facility.

The lanes will shift about 25 feet to the right in preparation for the upcoming median construction.

The change was set to happen Sunday night. However, VDOT Communications Specialist Jordan-Ashley Walker said they're using the backup date which is Monday, Feb. 10, starting as early as 7 p.m., through Tuesday, Feb. 11, at 5 a.m.

“We want to make sure that we have all of the correct resources here,” said Walker.

During this time, drivers should expect alternating multi-lane closures between Newtown Road and Witchduck Road.

"We know this is the busiest interchange in the Hampton roads region, and we really want to be mindful of motorists going through the area," Walker said.

VDOT says anyone traveling along I-264 east while the shift is being implemented should slow down. Be prepared for the new alignment and pavement markings, and be mindful of crews working along the interstate.

“Specifically we want to make sure that people are aware of the new pavement markings that are going to be in place,” said Walker.

The new traffic pattern, which will be in place for several months, allows crews to prepare for Greenwich Road flyover construction in the median of I-264, including the erection of steel bridge girders in late spring/early summer 2020.

The Greenwich Road flyover will carry traffic from Greenwich Road near TopGolf over I-264 to connect with Cleveland Street on the north side of the interstate.

“It’s a high priority and we’re looking forward to this significant step in the project," said Walker.
