VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A woman is in the hospital with serious injuries after she was hit by a vehicle in Virginia Beach on Wednesday evening, police said.
The Virginia Beach Police Department said the accident happened around 6 p.m. at the intersection of Virginia Beach Boulevard and Independence Boulevard, near Town Center. Authorities said the pedestrian is a 77-year-old woman. She was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Police also tell 13News Now the woman did not have the right-of-way when she attempted to cross. Additionally, the conditions were dark and rainy at the time.
Jillian Credle describes traffic at the Virginia Beach Boulevard and Independence Boulevard intersection as extremely bad when she crosses it four times a week.
“Everybody is just distracted, just... I guess you can say the phone usage or reckless driving, not caring," said pedestrian Credle.
Dean Raymond was in town visiting his family. He said he thinks twice before crossing the street.
“I always tell myself to be defensive you know, I just can’t see the walking guy and start going. I got to do a double take or even a triple take sometimes because you just never know with drivers nowadays.”
Recently, the City of Virginia Beach released a survey for people to fill out; the survey is an interactive map of intersections where people can leave comments about problem areas. Credle applauds the city's efforts.
"At least they’re trying. It’s the thought that matters," said Credle.
Meanwhile, Virginia Beach's Traffic Safety Unit is investigating the crash. There's no word on if any charges will be filed at this time.
