VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) — A tractor-trailer that careened into the Chesapeake Bay last week is now out of the water.
According to Chief Eddie Spencer with the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, the tractor-trailer was removed from the water around 11:45 a.m. Friday.
Precon Marine is still on scene looking for the container.
Investigators say on January 6, the driver, Matthew Killmon of Wachapreague, attempted to pass a vehicle while traveling southbound and lost control, crashed through the guardrail and plunged into the Chesapeake Bay.
Killmon, who was in the water for over 40 minutes before he was rescued, was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital to be treated for a broken arm, facial lacerations and hypothermia.
The crash damaged 200 feet of guardrail at the 14-mile post southbound, as well as some concrete. The repairs, which Thomas Anderson, deputy director of the facility, estimates will cost $122,000.
The accident remains under investigation with charges pending.
