VIRGINIA BEACH -- The ribbon will be cut Friday for the newest rec center in Virginia Beach.
The Bow Creek Community Recreation Center closed August 2013, was demolished December 2013 and has been rebuilt.
The decision to modernize was based on the fact that more and more people were using the facility and a 2009 condition assessment study rated its overall condition as "poor," officials said.
The new $28 million center on Club House Road has an expanded cardio/weight training area and group fitness studio, an indoor swimming pool with a diving area, a slide and separate lap lanes, an indoor double gym, a youth game room, classroom space for early childhood programs and meeting rooms.
It's energy efficient, too, using LED lighting and geothermal heating and cooling.
The ribbon cutting is 3 p.m. Speakers will include Mayor William D. Sessoms, Jr. and City Councilmember Shannon Kane.
Saturday is grand opening day. It's free to go all weekend and there will be many no-cost activities, including water exercises in the pool, LES MILLS® Bodypump group fitness class,Tabata classes, Zumba, yoga and events for the children.
Come Monday, you'll need a Virginia Beach Recreation Center membership to use the center. Click here for membership information.
