VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — You’re probably familiar with the Neon District in Norfolk and the Vibe District in Virginia Beach. Both hubs have anchored their respective cities' creative cultures.
Now, a new district in Virginia Beach has been officially recognized: 'The Artery.' Last week, City Council voted to recognize The Artery as a district of cultural significance.
The area spans along Laskin Road from Red Robin Road to right by the Oceanfront at Atlantic Avenue. Organizers said the goal is to be a "foodie hub" where people can enjoy food, art and music.
13News Now has confirmed with Jesse Wykle, one of the founders of The Artery, that organizers have plans to reintroduce the city to a strawberry festival, but instead of it being held in Pungo, the festival would take place in the district.
The Pungo Strawberry Festival had become yearly staple to the area until it was canceled every year since the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. In 2023, the festival's board of directors said they are "on hiatus until we can assemble a new team and a suitable venue avails itself," when parking became an issue.
The Artery organizers don't yet have details on when the event will take place or if the name of the festival will be changed to reflect the new location.
