Something stinks: The City of Virginia Beach investigates foul odor in Holland Pines neighborhood

In a statement, the City of Virginia Beach said the odor may be due to natural causes, and dry weather conditions may contribute to its intensity and persistence.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Something is in the air in a Virginia Beach neighborhood, and it doesn't smell too great.

Residents in the Holland Pines neighborhood said they've smelled a foul odor for several days. It's so bad that now, the City of Virginia Beach is investigating the odor.

Young neighbor Yuna Jung said she smells the odor when she heads to the bus stop or at softball practice.

“For like the past threeish days, it’s been sort of like a sulfury smell, sort of like rotting stuff,” Jung said.

Selena Gillion, another resident in the neighborhood, said she's also noticed the foul odor.

“So it’s really bad. It smells like 'sulfury' and like rotten egg,” Gillion said.

The “sulfury" smell has been lingering in the air. Taylor Stahor just moved to a home not too far away from the Holland Pines neighborhood. She's doing her best to avoid the foul odor.

“I went through the house and closed all of the windows and put in some wax warming cubes,” Stahor said.

Now, Virginia Beach Public Utilities and Public Works are investigating the cause of the smell.

In a statement, they said that they tested water samples from nearby ponds and waterways, and they did not find the evidence of sanitary sewage.

The statement goes on to say that natural causes could be to blame for the odor, and dry weather conditions may contribute to its intensity and persistence.

As the city continues its investigation, the bad smell is not stopping kids from playing outside.

Virginia Beach also working with Hampton Roads Sanitation District and the local office of the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality to investigate the smell.
