Senior residents voice concerns about living conditions at Virginia Beach apartment complex

Tenants at the Wesleyan Place Senior Apartments say they’ve complained to management but are continually met with little or no change.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. —

Several residents who live at the Wesleyan Place Senior Apartments in Virginia Beach tell 13News Now that they've been dealing with a range of issues including long waits for broken appliances, elevators not working and bug infestations.

"It's just ridiculous. A person at this stage in life shouldn't be exposed to [this]. You know, I could do better at the YMCA," one resident said.

None of the residents who spoke wanted to be identified fearing retaliation from management. Still, they said they’re at the end of their rope and say maintenance crews aren't fixing their issues in a timely manner.

“The 1st floor of the trash bin [that said] do not use ... out of order and now it's back on, but it was off for like two or three months, and so I had to go up to the third floor to get rid of my trash,” a resident said.

This isn’t the first time senior citizens relayed their concerns at this complex. Last December, 13News Now reported some residents were temporarily stranded in their homes because an elevator didn't work for a week.

On Wednesday, that same resident told 13News Now his heating and cooling system didn't work for most of the summer and is still not working correctly.

“Furnace, air conditioner, it's been out, off-and-on for three or four months. They come in and they throw a little band-aid on it, they don't really have anybody professionally coming in and done much,” the resident said.

13News Now asked if management on site was available to comment, but they declined. We also emailed and left voicemails with the management group's corporate office, but have yet to hear back.

A Virginia Beach spokesperson says there are no active code enforcement cases or recent complaints for the building in their system.
