VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Scott Taylor represented the second district in the House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019. Tuesday, he announced that he would be on the primary ballot for a bid to return.
It takes 1,000 signatures to put a candidate on the primary ballot, and on March 10, Taylor's campaign announced he had gotten more than enough.
In 2018, the 40-year-old Republican from Virginia Beach was defeated by the district's current Democratic representative, Elaine Luria. If he wins the nomination in June, he will go on to face Luria in a general election in November.
The second district includes all of Virginia Beach and Williamsburg, and parts of York, Accomack, and Northampton counties. It also includes parts of Norfolk and Hampton.
In December, Taylor decided to end his campaign running against Senate incumbent Mark Warner in favor of reclaiming his old seat.
Taylor isn't the only one who's announced intentions to enter the Republican primary, though. Also on Tuesday, Virginia Beach businessman Ben Loyola announced he had acquired double the number of signatures needed to put him on the June ballot.
Taylor used to be a Navy SEAL, and Loyola retired as a Navy Captain.
Taylor has yet to release his campaign's major issues and positions, but Loyola lists preserving the second amendment, protecting free-market health care and strengthening the military as some of his primary goals.
