VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Virginia Beach Police said Wednesday that alcohol and speed were both contributing factors in a two-vehicle crash that left one person dead Tuesday morning.
Police said the crash happened in the 2500 block of Dam Neck Road. That's near Drakesmile Road.
The release said early that morning, a Nissan pickup truck broke down while driving eastward on that road. The driver got out to work on his truck.
Soon after he did, police said a GMC SUV ran into the back of the disabled truck.
After the impact, the SUV rolled into the median where it hit a tree and caught on fire.
The SUV's driver, 33-year-old Nicolas William Radelt, died at the scene. He was from Smithfield, and was the only person in the SUV at the time of the crash.
The Nissan's driver, who had been working on the truck on foot, was sent to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police haven't shared his name.
Two other passengers of the Nissan truck, who had been inside the vehicle, were hurt but expected to be okay.
Investigators are still looking into the crash.
