VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A young man is dead after a shooting in Virginia Beach Monday morning, police confirmed.
Virginia Beach Police Department officials say officers arrived at Fox Creek Court near Lynbrook Landing after a 911 call came in around 9:40 a.m., as well as a Shotspotter activation.
When officers arrived they found a man, described by police officials as approximately 20 years old, with a gunshot wound. Officers said the victim passed away on the scene, though there was evidence both inside and outside the home in which the shooting happened.
"We're told that somebody passed away, shot in the chest," Kieyrha Zubair, a Virginia Wesleyan student who said she saw the scene on her way back from classes Monday.
A suspect is not yet in custody, authorities said, but they also do not believe the incident was accidental or a random act of violence. They added there is no threat to the general public.
Cars belonging to friends and family lined Lynbrook Landing Monday afternoon, searching for answers.
"Family grieving here as you can tell, our heart goes out to that family," said Jude Brenya, a public information officer with VBPD. "Our job is to investigate this and bring whoever did this to justice.”
Nearby Newtown Elementary School was briefly placed on external lockdown this morning while police investigated the initial call, Virginia Beach City Public Schools confirmed, although instruction continued as usual. A message was sent out to Newtown parents as well.
