VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Pembroke Square, formerly known as Pembroke Mall, announced a liquidation sale for this upcoming weekend.
The sale will happen from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Monday. Shoppers can enter through the doors past the brick wall in between DSW and Eyecare Optometry Associates.
Both community members and businesses are able to buy commercial and personal-use items. Desks, chairs, storefront windows, light fixtures, marketing supplies and more will all be available.
The items are on a first-come, first-served basis, and no items will be held. Items can only be purchased with cash and all sales are final. Buyers are responsible for loading and removing the items they buy from the property.
Pembroke Square is undergoing a massive transformation into a mixed-use development, and property managers need to make way for demolition.
"I understand that things change, but it's sad," said Virginia Beach resident Vincent Schilling.
Schilling and other shoppers caught a last glimpse at a place they described filled with family memories.
"I've done events here for Native American Heritage Month, which it happens to be, November. But, my aunt worked here at Things Remembered for 20-plus years," Schilling said.
It's a new chapter for the Virginia Beach institution that was established in 1966.
"It'll be quite a drastic change," said Ramsay Smith, president of Pembroke Commercial Realty.
By holding a liquidation sale, Smith said the team can clear the way before demolishing roughly 200,000 square feet of property.
Demolition is set to start on December 1, Smith said.
"A lot of mixed emotions here. Sad to see that it's come to this, but also a sense of curiosity as to what exactly they're going to put here in its place," said shopper Aaron Cotterell.
Nearly two dozen businesses, like the Target, Kohl's and Walgreens, are open throughout construction. Others either closed or moved in 2022.
"We have a hotel being planned. We have a multi-family luxury apartment community being planned. And, we're already under construction, obviously, with the senior living out of the north side," said Smith.
