OCEARCH: Great white shark surfaces off Virginia Beach

A great white shark pinged off the coast near Virginia Beach.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A great white shark that surfaced near the Outer Banks is on the move. This time, he surfaced just off the coast near Virginia Beach.

Just before Memorial Day Weekend, OCEARCH, a non-profit organization that researches great white sharks and other large apex predators, said two great white sharks surfaced near the Outer Banks.

One shark, Jane, has been hanging out near the Outer Banks for over a month.

The other shark was Brunswick. He's about 430 pounds and is considered a sub-adult. He left the Outer Banks and headed north.

On Tuesday, he surfaced at 6:20 p.m. near Virginia Beach.

Brunswick was tagged on February 26, 2019, near Hilton Head, SC. OCEARCH's tracking website claims he has traveled over 1150 miles in the past 103 days.

May and November are popular months for great white sharks to pop up off-shore of North Carolina and Virginia. It is part of the natural migration period, traveling in the spring and the fall between their northern breeding grounds and their winter home near Florida.

OCEARCH has tagged over 400 animals, click here to learn more.
