VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Military members around Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story packed the base movie theater to honor the life of Petty Officer 3rd Class Oscar Jesus Temores on Thursday.
The 23-year-old sailor was from California, but he left a lasting impression after he gave his life protecting the base entrance.
On November 30, 2019, a driver barreled towards Gate 8 and hit Temores' military car. The young sailor died on his way to the hospital.
“I know Petty Officer Temores saved countless lives,” said Base Commander, Captain Joey Frantzen.
Now the military family he saved is expressing gratitude, while the base Commander presented the Law Enforcement Medal of Honor to his family.
Captain Frantzen said, “and how important it is you know that we recognize them when they do lose their life in service.”
Tables displayed memories about the brother, father, son and husband. Speeches from the podium drew tears from loved ones.
“One thing I would say to him, is thank you,” said Watch Commander, Luke Mathias.
“One of the most important things Oscar’s taught me is to go into every day with a hard work ethic and determination to do the right thing,” said Watch Commander, Garrett Williams.
It was a final farewell to the sailor who leaves behind a legacy as a shining light to all he met.
“Here, it was real and you know he had a lot of people around here that loved him,” said Williams.
