Man facing charges after 'unprovoked attack' at Fairfield Shopping Center in Virginia Beach, police say

A 62-year-old man is in critical condition after he was assaulted at a busy shopping center Wednesday morning, according to Virginia Beach police.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A man is in critical condition after he was assaulted at a busy shopping center, according to the Virginia Beach Police Department (VBPD).

A spokesman with VBPD said the "unprovoked attack" happened at the Fairfield Shopping Center at around 7 a.m. Wednesday. A short time later, investigators said they already had a suspect in custody.

13News Now learned on Thursday that the suspect is 34-year-old Walter Martinez. Police say Martinez faces felony aggravated malicious assault.

People who live and shop in the area said they're shocked that a violent attack could happen in such a busy area.

“It’s surprising because this is a quiet neighborhood," said Virginia Beach resident Rita Sparhawk.

“We were surprised to hear about an assault here...I come here just about everyday to get items," said Virginia Beach resident Robert Klein.

Some even say they saw the aftermath of the violence Wednesday morning.

“I looked over the parking lot. There was a guy laying next to a truck," recalled Kempsville High School student Wyatt Wilkins. “He was covered in blood himself as well as the guy on the floor."

Police have not released the identity of the victim. The VBPD spokesman said they can’t comment on the details or motive behind the assault as the investigation is still ongoing.

Online records from the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office (VBSO) show Martinez is being held without bond.
