VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The man accused of attempted murder after a three-vehicle crash is scheduled for a bond hearing this week.
Matthew Rushin, 20, faced a judge as she formally read him his charge of 2nd degree attempted murder. It was a brief hearing as Rushin and his family ironed out details on further proceedings.
The suspect has been held on a no bond status since being arrested Friday night.
Police say he caused a three-vehicle crash that left a man severely injured with life-threatening injuries.
Witnesses said the moment of impact sounded like a bomb going off.
Barbara Messner took pictures after arriving on scene minutes after the crash.
“At least two or three people said he was going 90 mph and he did a U-turn to come back. So, you know, none of it makes any sense,” she said. “Except that he gave two different statements and from what I was told, he tried to leave the scene.”
Rushin’s family has defended his character since word got out about the arrest.
His mother wrote in a Facebook post that “He would NEVER intentionally hurt anyone!”
Rushin denied a request to speak with 13News Now from jail.
