VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A man is dead and a woman is in the hospital with serious injuries after an early morning crash on Shore Drive.
Virginia Beach police officers responded to the crash at the 2400 block of Shore Drive around 2:30 a.m. Sunday.
Two vehicles were involved in the crash; the driver of the first vehicle, 48-year-old Benjamin Alvarado Jr. was pronounced dead at the scene. A woman who was a passenger in his car was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
A Virginia Beach kickball community said Alvarado was a member of the group. In a Facebook post on Monday afternoon, the writer said "Ben’s life was cut short by a preventable tragedy—let’s honor his memory by making sure this doesn’t happen to someone else."
The second vehicle's driver, 22-year-old Samuel Randolph, was initially arrested and charged with driving under the influence (first offense).
On Tuesday, the Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney additionally charged Randolph with DUI Manslaughter and DUI Maiming.
This incident is still under investigation and officials say more charges are likely to be placed.
