VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) — A local Boy Scout from Virginia Beach is receiving a national honor for saving a boy from drowning.

James A. Roney, 17, from Virginia Beach Troop 362 will receive the Medal of Merit from the Boy Scouts of America at a National Court of Honor on December 20. He is being recognized for saving a boy who fell from a canoe in July of 2017.

While working on his rowing merit badge during summer camp at Camp Powhatan near Hiwassee, Virginia, Roney noticed another Scout in the same lake struggling in the water.

Roney grabbed a life jacket, swam out to the victim, and towed him to shore. Once on shore, the waterfront staff took the Scout to the medical building for treatment. The unnamed victim had a gash on his leg and injured his arm.

The BSA’s Medal of Merit is awarded to Scouts and Scouters who have performed some act of meritorious service above and beyond that normally expected of a youth or adult member of the Boy Scouts of America.
