KNOTTS ISLAND, N.C. — A fire on Knotts Island completely burnt down a building on Monday night and sent a woman to the hospital.
The Virginia Beach Fire Department says that they were dispatched to a report of a residential fire on Knotts Island on the Virginia Beach side around 10:15 p.m.
About 20 minutes earlier VBFD was dispatched to a report of a motor vehicle crash on the Causeway heading to Knotts Island. The Causeway was impassable due to multiple electrical lines down across the roadway and several utility poles.
All lines were still energized, and Virginia Power was already on the scene trying to mitigate the situation.
Virginia Beach units were staged in the parking lot of VBFD Fire Station 6 until Dominion Energy removed the wires and down poles for access to the roadway.
When VBFD units arrived about 15 minutes later, Currituck Engine 8 was actively fighting fire. The structure was a total loss and most of it except the brick chimney was burned and on the ground.
Crews continued to work to ensure the hot spots were extinguished. All occupants were out of the house before VBFD's arrival. Two people were displaced.
One woman was taken to the hospital afterward. The cause and origin are unknown at this time. Under investigation.
