VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- A high-speed chase ended with a deadly crash overnight in Virginia Beach.
Virginia State Police said a trooper spotted a stolen car on Northampton Boulevard near Interstate 64 in Norfolk around 11:22 p.m. Thursday. When the trooper tried to pull the car over, the driver took off.
Police said the driver went as fast as 100 miles per hour and switched to driving north in the southbound lanes of Northampton Boulevard, passing vehicles head-on at a high rate of speed.
The driver ended up running off the road and into a ditch, striking a cement barrier on Shore Drive in Virginia Beach.
The driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, died at the scene.
Police say the driver had no identification on him or inside the vehicle. Investigators confirmed the driver was in possession of a stolen firearm out of North Carolina and illegal drugs.
Police are continuing to work on identifying the driver.
