Hampton Roads runs the rainbow

The Virginia Beach Oceanfront transformed into a rainbow as runners participated in the Hampton Roads Pride Run the Rainbow 5K and Fun Run.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Hampton Roads Pride helped turn the Oceanfront into a rainbow with its 2nd Annual Run the Rainbow 5K and Fun Run.

The organization invites community members to "instill pride, celebrate unity and embrace diversity by creating visibility and promoting human and civil rights through education, celebrations and networking."

The race started at 11 a.m. Saturday from 2400 Atlantic Avenue.

Runners chose a color of the rainbow and as a group turned the Oceanfront into a rainbow during the 5K.

There was a post-race party at Calypso Bar & Grill at 11 01 Atlantic Avenue until 3:00 p.m.

The inaugural Hampton Roads Pride Run the Rainbow 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run was the first race in the U.S. to host a gender-neutral registration.
