Giant trolls promote environmentalism in new Virginia Aquarium exhibit

The exhibit opening Friday utilizes recycled art to demonstrate how trash can be turned into something beautiful.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A new exhibit coming to The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center enlists the help of larger-than-life creations to spread messages of sustainability.

The “TROLLS: Save the Humans” exhibit – opening Friday, Sept. 13 –  features six giant folklore-inspired troll sculptures made from reclaimed materials along the Aquarium’s Nature Trail.

The trolls are made to represent young activists on a mission to teach humans to live in harmony with the planet, after noticing all of the harm that’s been done to the environment. Each troll has a name, a distinct personality, and a special role they play within their tribe.

Ronja Redeye, the tribe’s leader, is said to have “a voice like whistling leaves in the wind” that everyone listens to. Another troll, Kamma Can, is a creator, here to teach humans how to make beautiful things with colorful plastic rather than just throwing them away.

Rosa Sunfinger is the "botanist troll" who is out to show humans how plants can bring old items back to life with her own DIY planter. Ibbi Pip hangs up birdhouses to encourage humans to embrace wildlife.

You can learn about the rest of the trolls in the exhibit at the Virginia Aquarium until Jan. 20, 2025.

The traveling exhibition is the product of a collaboration between recycle artist Thomas Dambo and Imagine Exhibitions. Dambo has more than 100 of his signature trolls on display in exhibits around the world, including in France, Singapore, and Australia.
