VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- A new shopping center under development will be the future home of German grocer Lidl.

Lidl will occupy 35,000 square feet and become the anchor tenant of the Strand retail center, located at the intersection of Holland Road and Warwick Drive, near Lynnhaven Parkway.

It will be one of the first locations in Virginia Beach for Lidl. Earlier this year, another location was announced for the corner of Indian River Road and Providence Road, according to the Virginian Pilot.

Founded in 1940 in Germany, Lidl has grown to be a successful chain of grocery stores, expanding throughout Europe, America and beyond. Currently it has 10,000 stores in 27 countries, and plans for the U.S. could be as many as 150 new stores.

The company has announced additional locations in Norfolk, Portsmouth and Richmond with a regional distribution center in Fredericksburg.

In addition to the Lidl grocery store, the new shopping center will also feature a Hardee's and Christian Brothers Automotive. The City of Virginia Beach expects the shopping center to open in summer of 2017.
