Two people killed in Virginia Beach crash

A release from police said the crash happened when the car hit a median in the road and went airborne, then hit and entangled in a tree.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Two people are dead following a single-vehicle accident in Virginia Beach, police said.

The crash happened Thursday night in the 5300 block of Virginia Beach Boulevard, near the Haynes Furniture store.

A release from police said the crash happened when the car hit a median in the road and went airborne, then hit and got entangled in a tree.

Police said the two people were dead in the car when officers and rescue teams got there.

On May 10, police identified the driver as 24-year-old Iyonni Aniko Jackson, and the passenger as 22-year-old Lexus Ivette Barnett.

Because of the way the car smashed into the tree, it took fire crews "an extensive period of time" to get Jackson and Barnett out of the wreckage.

Investigators think the car had been speeding before the crash.

The Fatal Crash Team (FACT) is still investigating the accident.
