Dome site project moving forward, adds to changing oceanfront scene

The scene along 19th street at the oceanfront is changing and the new dome site project is adding to it.

This week, a big project took a leap forward as the City of Virginia Beach came to a term agreement with developer Venture Realty Group to build an entertainment center and surf park.

The project has garnered attention, not only for its unique concept, but because it's backed by hip-hop superstar and beach native, Pharrell Williams.

It's one of the biggest projects ever in the city, costing $330 million. About $95 million would come from the city's tourism-related taxes and it could produce a tax revenue of $8 million per year.

City leaders consider this project a major transformation but it's just part of a bigger vision.

Just down 19th Street, at the convention center, Councilman David Nygaard said there have been very preliminary talks about possibly adding a headquarter hotel to the convention center to draw year-round conventions.

Down by North Birdneck Road is the approved $68 million sports center, which is expected to be done by November 2020.

On just the 19th Street stretch, a transformation is in the plans, which could change the landscape of the oceanfront.
