VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A woman is facing charges in Virginia Beach after leaving two dogs in a vehicle during the heat Wednesday afternoon, resulting in one of their deaths, police said.
The dogs' owner and custodian, Olga Mendoza, was charged with two misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty, according to the Virginia Beach Police Department.
The investigation began Wednesday around 1 p.m. when police responded to the 1100 block of Nimmo Parkway for a report of two dogs left in a vehicle.
"The outside temperature was 85 degrees with a heat index of 90 degrees, but it's unknown what the temperature was inside the vehicle where the dogs were," a spokesperson for the Virginia Beach Police Department told 13News Now.
Police said Mendoza took the other dog home to recover. The situation is still being investigated, police said.
