Court documents reveal new details about stolen ambulance in Virginia Beach

“He was distressed," mother says son lives with mental health

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Court Documents revealed new information about the person who stole an ambulance from Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital.

Investigators say 33-year-old Christopher Allman faces charges of grand larceny, felony eluding, felony destruction of property, impersonation of EMS personnel, tampering with an EMS vehicle, and maliciously activating a fire alarm.

13News Now viewers shared a video of the police pursuit. An ambulance crashed into the side of a building near Atlantic Avenue and Laskin Road. Virginia Beach Police used a tool to deflate the tires on the ambulance.

13News Now spoke with Allman’s mother, Stephanie Allman, who said her son suffers from mental health and was doing well but is unsure about what happened that night. “I don’t know what happened. He was doing great.”

Newly filed documents said Christopher Allman moved to Virginia Beach three months ago and had no prior criminal history. His mother said he moved to Virginia Beach for a relationship. On Tuesday, Stephanie said her son was supposed to fly to Texas.

“He was distressed, and we were just trying to get him home,” said Allman.

Instead, he ended up in the hospital after experiencing a mental health episode. “[He was taken to] the hospital for a psych [evaluation]. He was released. He was not admitted and jumped into an ambulance and stole it,” said Allman.

Court documents also said that Christopher Allman pulled a fire alarm at the hospital and gave police officers different names before jumping into the ambulance. It also said he drove the ambulance at high speeds before crashing at the Oceanfront.

“I’m not trying to take the blame off what he’s done. I know it’s horrible, but he failed that night, and therefore, he could have really hurt many people or himself,” said Stephanie.

Allman will appear in court on May 2, 2024.
