Coastal Edge Steel Pier Classic to bring hundreds of surfers to Virginia Beach

Organizers promise "thrilling surf action and vibrant surf art expo."

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The Coastal Edge Steel Pier Classic is returning to Virginia Beach for Memorial Day weekend, bringing "thrilling surf action and vibrant surf art expo" to the Oceanfront.

"Whether you're a seasoned surfer or simply appreciate the ocean's beauty, the Steel Pier Classic is an event not to be missed," according to Coastal Edge's website.

With mere days before the big event, crews are out at the Oceanfront preparing for all the fun that kicks off Friday and runs through Monday.

Hundreds of surfers from around the world are expected to flood in for the 21st annual event.

Organizers said the event will feature the best men and women WSL longboard athletes, along with a Pro Shortboard division.

In a video shared on Facebook, Coastal Edge's Wes Laine shared some of the highlights attendees can expect.

"It is a World Surf League 1,000-rated Surf Tour event," said Laine. "We'll have a lot of the world's best surfers here — Michael Dunphy who's currently on the Challenger Series and we'll have Joel Tudor and Tosh Tudor this year. So we have a lot of the world's best competitors here for the surf contest at First Street."

There will also be a 5K run and a student art expo. Plus, on Monday, there will be the surf contest finals and Memorial Day Paddle Out to honor servicemembers.

"Everyone is invited whether you're in the contest or not," said  Laine.
