VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Virginia Beach City Council is moving forward with Sports and Convention District plans. On Tuesday night, the council approved a motion for a study in a seven to four vote.
The district would include the area around the Virginia Beach Convention Center and Virginia Beach Sports Center on 19th Street.
Members approved an economic impact study on the Capstone project proposal. The resolution directs the city manager to undertake an economic impact study and infrastructure cost analysis for the district.
The total cost of the study is $75,000, the economic impact will cost $25,000, and the infrastructure cost analysis is $50,000.
One of the members to vote against the measure was Councilmember Chris Taylor.
He shared his decision with 13News Now on Wednesday.
"Why would we spend another $200,000 to complete a seventh study on the same area when we have a RASAP plan adopted in 2020 by the previous city council that calls for a hotel, a multifamily and multi-use and office on the same corridor?" questioned Taylor.
The RASAP plan, the Virginia Beach Resort Area Strategic Action Plan, details the area's vision and goal.
Once the City Council receives the study results, the council will determine its next steps.
